The new generation is growing up in the age of short-form videos, instant messaging, social media, and news coming in via push notifications instead of big-screen TV. This poses new opportunities as much as it poses unique challenges.
Moderation and Reason
David Feng advocates a responsible approach to technology. Moderation and reason must be first and foremost in regulating the use of technology. Blanket device bans don’t work, but neither does unlimited use practices, either.
A Plus, Not A Replacement
Technology should be used to make people’s lives more enriching. It should be a “plus” for users. Although tickets, cards, and even some ID are being shifted into digital form, tech devices should still be a “plus” or addition — not a replacement. For example, Zoom meetups can’t entirely replace offline socialising — and it shouldn’t, either.
Keep Humans Controlling Devices
Online communications can only proceed with reason when we realise that actual living human beings man the other end of the channel, and they, unlike robots, have actual feelings. David is also in favour of appropriate, proportionate regulation of artificial intelligence technologies — they should facilitate our everyday lives, but a human must ultimately be in control.
